Broken Z was an attempt to remodel and re-contextualize an earlier Mexican-Hungarian Contemporary Dance piece called Broken Zoom. Due to poor financial conditions we had to replan our ideas about touring the original piece. Finding ways and forms to still spread the work we created a sibling piece, an event of collaboration of one Mexican dancer and local artists from dance, fine art and music. An exhibition where actions, objects, installations and music created an environment for an interplay be- tween the different mediums.

And at the same time by the influence of the events of the summer of 2015 in Hungary, we felt that we need to re-question our relations to our practice of art making. In times when we have to face such crisis as the flee of migration, what our generation had not seen before in Europe, what does it mean to make my art. What can I do with skills of dance, fine art or film making? We wanted to reflect with our own artistic approaches not willing to be directly political but rather being socially responsive. We made a set of actions that were dealing with questions like power, fear, alienation, manipulation, loss.

“Broken Project is a performative theatrical installation, expanded in time and space. The aim of it is to question our society’s cultural issues regarding relations of the individual and the community. It is not intended to amuse or entertain, to answer questions or to provide jurisdiction. Instead, it tries to discov- er autonomous attitudes of human empathy, solidarity, openness and tolerance. Participating artists deliver their own media to process the current topic, to connect to one another, in order to present a piece that one can involve in and connect to, to be able to create one’s own variants. A complex cor- pus of performances and installations connected in one performative space, Broken Projekt seeks for answers on authenticity of ars poetica in today’s Hungary. For our provisioned next phase, we would like expand this piece to create a full-length participatory artwork.” Tamás Bakó
