Is an immersive audio-reactive piece with a duration of 15-21 minutes. It is a representation of the experience of the so-called “mystical death” that can be experienced through whirling which has been a form of sacred dance practised in sufism. It is a process that involves a deep connection to the energy that connects everyone and everything. Through this alignment of the body, the transpersonal experience comes, we drop out of linearity and the limits that we regularly perceive change. Like in a dream one can be in more than one place at the same time.
Thinking of light as consciousness, which is what forms reality, we see the many layers created by the livestream of the dance together with the visuals being projected back onto the dancer, as a sort of portal being opened as the dancer becomes the dance and occupies the parallel realities.
This piece has been performed at Sunday Church in Newtown Radio (NY 2019), at the opening night of Fanny Pérez's solo show Electricity at Center for Remembering and Sharing (NY 2019), at an art gathering at Rosekill Art Farm curated by Jana Astanov from Creatrix Magazine (NY 2021), at The Woods fundraiser (NY 2021), and most recently at El Otro Mono (MEX 2021) and Sinestesia (MEX 2021).
What we need for this piece is a large white surface to project onto. The sq. footage can vary. The different places we have done it have varied in dimension ranging from 6’ x 12’ to a whole barn that was probably about 30’ x 15’. The projector can be more than 50ft. away from the backdrop.
ZEREZ is formed by sisters Claudia and Fanny Pérez Gutiérrez.
