David Szauder’s practice focuses on the relationship between artificial intelligence, memory and visual culture. Working extensively with generative AI, he uses artificial image-making not simply to produce new imagery, but as a means of transforming, reinterpreting and reactivating existing cultural and personal memories.
In I Believe to My Soul, this approach encounters the voice of Iranian musician Farhad Mehrad. A song from another historical moment becomes the starting point for a new visual construction, generated in the present through artificial intelligence. Past and present coexist without establishing an explicit narrative connection between them.
The images deliberately avoid referring directly to any specific contemporary event. This absence is part of the work. What remains unnamed nevertheless enters the space between sound and image, leaving the viewer to recognise — or refuse to recognise — possible connections with the world outside the artwork.
The use of artificial intelligence introduces a further layer to this relationship between memory and the present. Images generated by a computational system accompany a human voice preserved from the past, creating a tension between artificial construction and cultural memory, between what can be generated and what continues to resonate.
I Believe to My Soul does not attempt to explain or illustrate the present. Instead, it uses AI-generated imagery and a voice from the past to create a space of association, uncertainty and recognition. The work ultimately asks what images can still make us see, and what we choose to acknowledge when we do.
